About NATMA

Background

Since the earliest arrivals of Taiwanese immigrants, the community has maintained a strong network across the United States reflected by the early establishment of the Taiwanese American Association, which has chapters in most metropolitan areas. The post-1965 immigration patterns and the healthcare professional recruitment efforts by the United States during the 1970's brought a wave of migration of Taiwanese health professionals who would ultimately settle in this country with their families.

1980's - 1990's
A series of organizations were founded to bring together highly educated individuals among the 1st generation Taiwanese community across the country. The first such organization was the North American Taiwanese Professors Association (NATPA) in 1981, and was soon followed by NATMA (Medical) in 1984, NATWA (Womens') in 1988, NATEA (Engineers) in 1991, and NATSA (Taiwan Studies) in 1994.

NATMA is Established

1984
The North American Taiwanese Medical Association (NATMA) was founded to promote cultural and educational exchange of Taiwanese American Medical and Dental professionals. The membership consists primarily of 1st generation Taiwanese Americans.

Currently, the organization is revising its Bylaws to expand membership beyond physicians and dentists, in order to recognize the diversity of health care professions represented by the growing 2nd generation membership.
