NATMA Foundation is offering five (5) $ 1,000 scholarship grants to recognize medical/dental/allied health students, residents or fellow-in-training of Taiwanese American descent.

Eligibility

Medical, dental or allied health students, residents or fellows of Taiwanese American descent who are in good standing and under training at an accredited U.S. institution or program.

Application process

Complete and submit the following items:

各位NATMA會員:

利用NATMA發newsletter的機會，向各位做2008年年度報告。

NATMA Foundation成立於1995年，是tax code 501(C)3 Charitable的組織，捐款可全額抵稅。目前有六個工作要項，分別為1. Dr. C.Y. Lee Young Physician Lectureship 李鎮源青年醫師講座。2. I-Yang Lin M.D. Memorial Lectureship林一洋紀念講座。3. International Medical Mission義診。4. Taiwan for WHO fund台灣加入世衛基金。5. Medical Services in Taiwan。6. Hawaii 肝炎治療基金。

2008年基金會贊助兩次NATMA的義診活動，三月在海地，八月在尼加拉瓜，購買醫藥品，家庭藥包，牙科手提式治療機及器材，並贈送尼國居民凈水器。

今年2008已頒發首屆「台美學生獎學金」，給美國國內醫學院，牙醫學院及醫藥專業學院的學生，希望他們在學生時代就認識NATMA，期待畢業後能繼續參與NATMA的活動。經委員會審查，一共有五位得獎者，名單為Rita Chuang，Alex Lin，Peter Chai，Stanley Liu，及Jennifer Pan，每位給予$1,300。

The overseas Taiwan tour for young medical and health professionals is planned for March 29 - April 4, 2009. This is an excellent opportunity for 2nd generation NATMA 2G members to join others from the US and Taiwan for a productive professional and cultural exchange. Plus, as many who have been on the trip before will tell you, it's a lot of fun and worthwhile.

Dear NATMA Members and Colleagues,

In 2008, we have witnessed great turmoil and uncertainty in Taiwan’s political landscape, Wall Street’s ongoing meltdown, and a domestic and international economic crisis and recession of historic proportions. In spite of all this, thanks to the hard work, dedication, and generosity of the members and donors of NATMA, we can be proud to reflect on the many achieved goals and accomplishments of NATMA during this past year.

Over 400 people, including 50 second generation Taiwanese-Americans and 6 previous NATMA Presidents, attended our Annual Dinner. Along with this, 10 CME credits were offered. I would like to personally thank all the organizers and participants of this event for an outstanding job well done!!

One of my goals for NATMA is to continue to recruit more retired doctors, along with a new class of Medical students and residents to our growing family and community. In order to attract and accommodate the ongoing growth of NATMA and 2G,We need to consolidate our headquater, so we have created a new Executive Director position. I am pleased to announce that Dr. Han Chiang 江漢塗 has stepped up to the challenge and accepted the Executive Director position. Dr. Chiang has tremendous passion and heart for NATMA, and will bring with him a wide array of technical skills and experience to the organization. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Chiang on his new position!!

I have several announcements and action items for you to mark on your calendars. We will be having International Medical Missions and tours to the Dominican Republic from March 5-13, 2009. The First Lady will be the host for the mission. Along with the rewarding sense of accomplishment that comes with helping out the world community, there will be a great number of amenities for us to enjoy in the Dominican Republic including beautiful golf courses, gorgeous beaches, and scenic, breathtaking views, all of which make for a good and memorable family outing. There is a maximum person limit of 50 attendees, so be sure to sign up quickly to reserve your spot. On November 7, 2009, another medical mission will take place, this time in a remote, central mountain and southern Taiwan beach. This meeting will again offer CME credits, so be sure to also sign up for this mission as soon as possible.

NATMA was established 24 years ago with a clear focus on participating in fund raising activities , servicing the Taiwanese medical community and enriching the thread with our homeland and country of Taiwan (not China). I am confident that the goals and visions we share for NATMA in this upcoming year are realistic and within our grasp. In the words of United States President Barack Obama, “Know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy.” Only with your continued support, can NATMA build towards a better tomorrow.

新年才過,舊曆年接踵而至,令人應接不暇。元月是紀念羅馬兩面門神JANUS的拉丁語,一面回顧既往,一面盼望未來。弟在此向各位報告過去一年來協會的行程和今年的展望。如有建言,請不稟示教。

歷史會記下2008年是陰暗,傷心,無助,失望,不甘的年代。年初國民党政權復辟,九流政府治國無能,一昧傾中,喪權辱國,真是”宰相有權能割地,孤民(臣)無力可回天”。年末的金融危機,股市崩盤和全球不景氣的背景下,醫師總會却一路走來,始終如一。三月初的海地國的戰地義診,成果非凡,國際注目。再次感謝王政卿,林芳敏,江漢塗,李惠仁,蔡寅三,許左龍,黄崇福夫婦,Ferdinand夫婦的勇氣和愛心,果然不入虎穴,焉得虎子”。對WHO的無力感,義診將成為我們同心同力的主軸。醫牙師群受社會敬仰,愛護有加,這是起碼良知的回報,希望會員踴躍投入這行列車。您將體會”施比受有福”的真諦。

三月底,受邀参加紐約華人對臺灣選後對華人世界的看法, 和五月初,在新州参議員Lautenberg的新州族群方桌討論會,提出臺灣人和臺灣人醫師的立場,遠見,為協會發聲。

九月五日三天年會,在新州紐瓦克機場Marriott hotel舉行,全程由NATMA 2G第二代主講,,學術題目引人,內容豐富,且牙醫護及藥品研發並顧,看到年青人在醫藥界的崛出表現”青出於藍,而勝於藍”我們竟然有無盡的成就感。参與會員也頒十小時的CME,感謝翁仁田,陳燦世的貢獻。晚會請來民進黨主席蔡英文女士主講’台灣的前途”並接受李汝城盼發”林一洋演講獎”中外來賓約四百人,寧聽這位臺灣明曰之星的想法和看法.並為她募款一萬元,感謝慷慨解囊的會員.許正雄也頒獎五位年青學術獎金,每位一千元。當晚傾盆大雨,第二天却風和日麗,讓参與鄭國竇Manhattan遊艇的九十位會員家屬,滿載而歸。最後更要感謝創會會長周烒明夫婦,及楊次雄夫婦,鄭天助夫婦,王政卿夫婦,林榮松,林益顯,許正雄等七位前總會長的参加。他們年復一年的参與,給薪火的傳遞平添助力。

成立一年的NY2G在Jerry Tsong領軍下,聚會繁,我参加一次讀書會,寫了一篇好酒和好書”在中文報紙發表,寄上給大家参考,感激臺灣人醫師對子孫的良好家教。

今年三月五曰至三月十三曰將在多明尼加共和國義診,人員暫定五十名.它是加洛比海的旅遊盛地,老少咸宜,小白球場,海灘,風景,國際知名,尼國總統夫人添為地主招待,又有臺商可以逗陣同樂,請勿錯失良機良辰。

十一月初,會安排臺灣義診十天到十四天,上山下海,到海角七號的恆春尋舊義診美食,在高雄與長庚王清貞学術討論,北上新高山,臺中醫学大学研討會,年會與臺灣合辦CME,或再義診。兼為臺灣年底鄉鎮市長選舉助力,正確行程正在研議中。

語曰”下醫醫病,中醫醫人,上醫醫國”當家園正遭遇大病變的緊急時刻,讓我們團聚在NATMA的大旗下,不但治病,治人,也診治我們的家國臺灣。

As the year comes close to the end. I would like to take this occasion to thank you for your support for the wonderful year NATMA have accomplished.

The nomination committed had recommended Dr. Norman Chu as President of 2010 -2011. See attachment.

As by law states the President shall communicate the report of the Nominating Committee to the members at least forty-five days before election. Additional nominations may be made by signed petition of the least fifteen active members in good standing which should be submitted to the Secretary (or Headquarter) no later than forty-five days before election.” I am therefore informing you and ask you to submit the other candidates of your preference by petition within two weeks.

Members and friends:

Greetings from headquarters! Our three-day NATMA Annual Meeting is fast approaching. It will be held at the Marriott Hotel, Newark Liberty International Airport, on September 5^th to 7^th 2008. I personally invite you and your family to join this important event.

Haiti medical mission was a knock-out: “healing the sickness, one patient at a time.” We saw more than1, 300 patients and operated on 35. We met the foreign minister, several congressmen/women, and the mayor in efforts to tighten the relationship between Taiwan and Haiti. Haiti’s local TV and newspapers broadcasted a big report on it. The New Jersey Progress and Healthy Edge, the Florida Haiti Community newspaper, and ETTY 東森 National TV station all brought images of NATMA to the national and international level. Please join me in thanking Han T. Chiang, MD, Yihnan Chiou, MD, Thung F. Huang, DDS, Shei T. Huang, DDS, Tso Long Hsu, DDS, Huey J. Lee, MD, Fan-Ming Lin, MD, Yan-San Tsai, MD, Jen Chin Wang, MD, Michelange Ferdinand, MD.

Also a success: on March 21, 2008, NATMA and Taipei Medical University held a joint medical conference in Taipei led by Drs. Huey Lee, Tien C. Cheng and Jen-Tien Wung.

With regard to WHO, after serious discussion with Dr. Yu and others, we feel strongly that we can no longer support it under the current Taiwan government. However, I wrote an open letter to Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO to urge her help and support of Taiwan’s bid to WHA.

The Annual Meeting promises to be exciting and rewarding! Dr. Jung-San Shen negotiated a great deal for a five-star hotel: $119.00 per night. The Marriott is ready to welcome you and your family. Drs. Michael Chen and Jen-Tien Wung are working very hard to organize a 8- CME program consists of the popular and update topic led by outstanding 2G speakers . Let’s enjoy the fruits of our labor. The newly elected DPP Chairperson, Ms. Tsai, 蔡英文 will be our key note speaker at banquet. FAPA president Prof. Yang, 楊英育 will be joining us as well. Mr.J Watt will talk about 庚子賠款. In addition, Dr. Robert Cheng is arranging the post meeting for 75 people only in a private brunch buffet cruise to circle Manhattan on Sunday, September 7, 2008. For those who join the cruise, NATMA will pay for your bus transportation to New York and back to the hotel at 3:30pm. I look forward to see you all.

Healing the Sickness, One Patient at a Time

Dr. Jung Tsai and his medical team just returned from a humanitarian health mission trip to Haiti. Dr. Tsai is a general and vascular surgeon at RWJ University Hospital at Rahway NJ and he is President of the North American Taiwanese Medical Association which is comprised of approximately fifteen hundred dentists and physicians of varying specialties. Since 2003, this association has provided annual medical missions to the needy in various Caribbean nations. This year, Dr. Tsai selected Haiti because there is a strong Haitian immigrant presence at Rahway hospital and in the Elizabeth, N.J. area.

The team, laden with medical supplies and equipment, left Kennedy to land in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. On arrival they were greeted by the Haitian Health Department, Foreign Ministry and television camera crews. Haiti is perhaps the most destitute country in the western hemisphere largely due to political unrest, consequently, the majority of Haitians fail to receive even basic healthcare. During the five days that Dr. Tsai’s team was in Haiti, they were able to provide medical and dental care and surgical procedures to approximately fifteen hundred patients.

The team spent the first and second days in Port-au-Prince treating basic maladies that are easily remedied in our country but go untreated in Haiti; high blood pressure, skin diseases, infection, malnutrition and diabetes. On the third and fourth days Dr. Tsai’s team relocated to a countryside hospital Clinic in Port-Salut where the responsibility of medical care was dependent on the efforts of only one mid-wife, two physicians(one Cuba trained and one part time Cuba export), neither of whom were surgeons. Dr. Tsai established the operating room at the hospital and in forty-eight hours performed 35 surgical procedures including operations on various small tumors, breast lumps, hernia, hydrocele, parotid abscess, and fractures. At the same time, the medical team, including Trinitas staff member, Dr. Michel-Ange Ferdinand, and his wife, Joseline,and NATMA physicians provided two months medical supplies and vitamins for diabetes, high blood pressure, infections, cardiac conditions and malnutrition’s. The Dental teams brought portable dental equipment to the field were the most effect and welcome parts of the teams.

The medical team returned home exhausted but satisfied from the reward of helping people, changing lives and improving the community in Haiti. Not only did our doctors and dentists heal the sick but more importantly, provided hope and inspiration to the Haitian community, empowering them through better health to make a better tomorrow for themselves.

Dear NATMA members,

Happy holidays to you and your family! It is an honor to serve as president of this organization. I appreciate the trust you have instilled in me. The working committee, in conjunction with the New York Chapter, has arranged the following programs for 2008. Please mark the days and join our activities.

1. International Medical Mission to Haiti: February 9 to16, 2008. This will include a trip to the Dominic Republic. The itinerary is enclosed. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in this hemisphere. There is a Haitian proverb that says, “Beyond mountains, there are mountains.” This is a beautiful expression of hope and struggle. The goals and purposes of the mission are to give life a chance in a country that desperately need our help and give them hope for a better tomorrow. I plea you to take a week out of your busy schedule to joint us. I guarantee you that exploring the mountains beyond the mountains will be a rewarding experience in your life. We need people in the fields of Obstetrics-Gynecology, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Neurology, and any other specialist.

2. The 2008 Taiwanese Presidential Election. The impact of this election will be tremendous. We encourage you to go back to vote. We have a half-day medical seminar on March 21, 2008 at Taipei Medical University for those who wish to deduct the expense of the trip. We will provide the following topics: 1, Radiologic Diagnosis in 2008 by Dr. Lee. 2, the Role of G-I system in Lipid metabolism by Dr. Tsai; 3, the current management of DVT by Dr. Tsai. 4, the novel treatment of Ischemic Heart by Dr. Cheng.

3. “WHO for Taiwan or Taiwan for WHO”: May 20, 2008. This year we will again arrange a trip to Geneva in order to support this important cause. The trip will also include a European history and golf tour. The detailed schedule will be forthcoming.

4. The NATMA Annual Meeting: September 5-7, 2008. The meeting will include 2G and reunion of the Young Taiwanese American Physician Visiting Taiwan Program. This year you won’t want to miss the keynote speaker. A post-meeting trip will also be arranged. Come to the greater New York region, the City Never Sleep and enjoying your stay.

5. United Nations for Taiwan rally: September 13, 2008. This year more than three thousand people took to the streets of New York City in order to support Taiwan. If you can, stay in Big Apple for extra few days.

親愛的NATMA會員:

歡迎聖誕佳節來臨暨新年快樂！

北美洲台灣人醫師協會總會將於明年由西岸加州洛衫磯移師美東大紐約區，為期兩年。感謝會員對我的信任，真是誠惶誠恐。我開始敲鑼打鼓，在新澤西新同樂餐廳召開籌備大會，有將近卅人參與。

明年的主要工作如下：

第一，年會三天是最重要的節目，它包括醫學教育，第二代醫師節目和晚會。與會者賴弘典牙醫師建議配合明年台灣入聯合國在九月十三曰（星期六）的遊行，希望能在九日五日到七日舉行，會後由美食旅遊家鄭國賓醫師安排旅行五天，再回來參與遊行；今年有三千多人，轟動紐約市，希望再接再厲，於是無異議而通過。年會地點，決定在新澤西紐瓦克機場內的MARRIOTT HOTEL舉行。

第二，２Ｇ的參與已不是協會的夢，他們有自已的NETWORK。美東地區估計不少於三百人，都有非凡的成就，雞尾酒HIV VIRUS 專家何大一醫師也是半個２G。今晚在場，年輕的賴一成醫師是MERCK藥廠的研發部主任；年會將有他們自已的節目。

第三，五月廾日，TAIWAN FOR WHO 在日內瓦示威，歷年，協會都是現場的最大團隊；任務尚未成功，同仁仍須努力；繼續由游祥修醫師主導，完後將有歐洲及高爾夫球之旅遊。

第四，明年臺灣總統三月二十二日的選舉日是臺灣何去何從的決定日，“他，馬的”勝選將是臺灣的沉淪，台灣人責無旁貸，袛有再度撐起重擔，協會鼓勵會員放下繁忙的工作，為母親台灣請假回台，協會不組團回台，但在三月二十一日下午與台北醫科大學共同安排醫學教育，回台參與者或可 DEDUCT Business EXPENSE。

第五，MEMBERSHIP DRIVE 由蕭宏夫與林芳敏醫師負責。協會約有一千五百位會員，十六個分會。在北美醫護人員應不止於此，在臺灣有七成五的人認為自己是臺灣人，協會更要伸出溫暖的手，號召海外醫護人員入會，共襄盛舉。

第六，海地醫療隊將組四十人團。於二月九曰（星期五），在海地四天三夜做醫療及手術，轉多明尼加共和國ニ天一夜，潔白的海灘與高球賽齊飛，詳細旅遊行程，有精彩的說明，名額有限，欲報從速。當地衛生部及教育部都已充分合作，會員絕對可以發揮所能及愛心。

第七，工作人員的指定邀請。賴弘典、鄭國寶，做公關；賴一成、黃志超做２G；王政卿、陳家榮做出版；吳郁彬、陳坤海做醫學校連絡；樊豐忠、廖武輝經濟；江漢塗、黃崇福做國際醫療；翁仁田、陳燦世做教育；黃正雅、謝伯夫做BYLAW；財務張啟晏牙醫師；林景福秘書長；李惠仁、沈榮三第一、第二副會長。圍隊的分工合作於焉完成。與會人員都非率興奮，發言建議豐富，討論熱忱。有的已經退休，有的半退休，有的才剛出道，三代同堂，卻都擁有一顆溫暖的臺灣心。

北美洲台灣醫師人員多年來努力不懈，得天獨厚，不但收入豐富，備受尊敬，也為社會所器重。是不折不克的NOBLE PROFESSION。我們要珍惜福氣，不要吝於付出，富窮人、病人有需要的時候，提拱免費醫療服務是我們最低的本份。希望大家攜手共同合作。服務是會長的責任與義務，有任何建議，請大家指教。積極參與。真心感謝會員多年來的支持。並請各分會寄上新任團隊名單。

總會副會長南加州分會會長許昭雄醫師

自從二零零六年全國總會由聖路易遷到南加州一年半的時間以來，南加州分會一直與總會分勞分憂，共同努的來辦NATMA各種活動，其中有兩次為台灣參與世衛的日內瓦宣達團，國際義診團去年九月去巴拿馬團員有五十一人，今年二月去瓜地馬拉參加人數多達六十四人，南加分會會員更是踴躍的參加，而這種以醫療為台灣拼外交的模式也從此將是NATMA不間斷的經常性運作，高度的來發揚醫師的天職。

為了讓外州會員有賓至如歸的感覺，我們今年在年會的第一天，總會與南加分會一起做東，為大家提供海鮮百匯晚餐。年會當中，CME及台灣之夜的晚會節目是最為主要，而Keynote speaker凱撤醫療網南加州總裁 Dr. Chu的講題相當特別，他要介紹最新的電子化病歷記錄，將是醫療史上的一大改革。晚會的娛樂節目也極精釆，第一次請到了世界聞名的歌劇演唱家張志成夫婦，台灣歌曲手語舞蹈，醫師四重唱，國際義診團及WHO宣達團大合唱，群星會，以及藝術品展覽等。

NATMA是旅美醫界先驅神經科泰斗周烒明醫師於二十三年前在克利夫蘭創會，當時台灣退出聯合國，同時也失去了世衛的會籍，因而剛創立的醫師協會特別有必要冠以台灣人三個字來讓美國及世人能夠看到台灣人的存在。事過境遷，一代傳一代，如今我們正處於世代交替的重要關頭，就讓我們的社團在嶄新的時空當中，不論老少，大家共同以 “台灣的美國人”團結在一起吧。今天在此開會的醫師們，有的是本身從台灣移民來美國，有的隨父母親來美國，有的是在美國出生而父母親來自台灣，大家都與台灣有深切的關係。做為一個醫師，他們的工作是一種奉獻，每一位都是經過長期的磨煉，才能從醫學院畢業，工作的時候也與各種醫事專業人才互相配合，也因此我們的社團有機會得到醫事相關的人才來加入，應是一種加分的作用，這個問題是數年來不少人的主張，我們南加州分會也會好好的把這一件事情作一個深切的考慮，並與總會做適當的配合。

我們邀請的特別來賓包括台灣駐美代表吳釗燮博士，行政院衛生署陳時中副署長，駐洛杉磯經文處魏武煉處長等，他們也將在我們年會CME之後的特別節目“台灣參與世衛及國際醫療研討會”上為我們提供寶貴的意見。會後旅遊包括賭城拉斯維加斯，胡佛水壩，西大峽谷天行走廊等地的三日遊。南加州分會在本年的年會上很榮幸能與總會一起為全体北美洲台灣人醫師協會會員及各位鄉親以地主的身份來服務，本人以分會會長代表所有南加州會員向大家表達最熱忱的歡迎。祝福全体與會的貴賓身体健康，事事如意，謝謝!

Highlights of the 2007 NATMA Annual Convention and Post-Meeting Tour

Dear NATMA members,

Greetings! The first six months of the 2007 was a busy time for NATMA. This is a brief summary.

1. Guatemala Medical Mission (2/9/07-2/17/07): This is the highest participation in the NATMA history with 64 team members took part in this mission. We saw 3800 patients in three days. We also had a chance to learn about the Maya culture. We welcome members for the future participation.
2. “Taiwan for WHO” Panel Discussion (4/7/07-4/8/07): There were three NATMA Panel Discussion “Taiwan for WHO” at San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles.

NATMA 2007 coming activities:

1. WHO Tour: 5/12 – 5/24, 38 people will be going to Geneva to support Taiwan’s join for WHO. This will be followed by tour in Italy.
2. NATMA 2007 Annual Convention (6/29 to 7/1) at the Pacific Palm Conference Resort, City of Industry, California. Post-meeting tour will be followed. This year’s program includes CME program, WHO & International Medical Mission Seminar, and Art Exhibition. 3. Taiwan-America Medical Exchange Visiting Tour: Dates are set from Nov 3 to Nov 11, further notice will be given.
4. Young Taiwanese American Physician Visiting Program to Taiwan will be continued this year, further notice will be given.
5. The NATMA Foundation will be establishing Scholarship for Medical and Dental Students.
6. Membership Expansion: NATMA Bylaw will be amended to accommodate more membership.

親愛的NATMA會員： May 2, 2007

大家收信平安！2007年的前半年，對NATMA總會團隊而言，是忙碌的一段時光，在此向各位會員報告。

1. 2月9日到2月17日到瓜地馬拉Guatemala義診：此次義診團共有64人，是NATMA義診四次以來，人數最多的一次。三天的義診共看了3800人次的病人，也有機會認識到神祕的馬雅Maya文化。歡迎有志之士來加入團隊。
2. 4月7日及8日：NATMA在San Diego、Orange County及Los Angeles共舉行了三場的“ 台灣加入WHO”研討會。

現在報告NATMA未來2007年的活動規劃：

1. 台灣加入WHO宣達團：5月12日到5月24日，現已有38人到日內瓦為台灣二千三百萬人民的基本健康人權嗆聲，接著有義大利之旅，全部自費。
2. 2007 年NATMA年會：已訂於6月29日至7月1日在南加州工業市的Pacific Palm Conference Resort舉行，會後並有旅遊。今年的醫學再教育CME講員陣容堅強，並舉辦“WHO及國際醫療義診”的座談會。今年特別擴大藝術品的展覽，歡迎會員或家屬提供繪畫、攝影或雕塑作品，有意展示者，請連絡林益顯醫師，618-656-3378，E-mail- linpainclinic1@sbcglobal.net，或王秀雄醫師，714-835-1818，fax714-289-2588，E-mail- rogerwangmd@yahoo.com。年會節目表及報名表請見內頁。
3. 台美醫學交流訪問團：已訂在今年11月3日到11月11日返台，詳情日後會再通知，並計劃會後到柬埔寨吳哥窟旅遊。
4. 海外台美青年醫藥專業人士訪問團：去年2006由NATMA及僑委會OCAC合辨，受到年青一代的肯定，已有人來詢問。今年計劃繼續舉辦，已在接洽中，請密切注意。
5. 推動NATMA Foundation的功能，注重International Medical Mission的Fundraising，也將設立Scholarship for Medical and Dental Student。
6. Membership Expansion：NATMA 成立已進入23年，時空及人事都已有變化，第一代逐漸進入退休期，我們需要台美第二代來延續及發揚NATMA的宗旨，這幾年總會理事會都在熱烈討論擴大會員資格的議題，現已達成共識，屆時發函由會員來同意Bylaw的修改。
